I have always been a long-time fan of Tolkien’s works, particularly The Lord of The Rings and his larger body of work. What intrigued me is how his books have hand-drawn maps. These maps were produced by his son, Christopher, who meticulously detailed his father’s world through cartography. I spent long hours examining the maps, imagining the journeys undertaken by those who lived in Middle-Earth.

During the 2020 pandemic lockdown, I undertook a project to reproduce a Tolkien-inspired map of Malaysia. I extensively researched Malaysia’s land cover, topography and major highway routes. True to Tolkien’s cartography, the emphasis was on the presence of mountain ranges, lakes and rivers. Over a few weeks, I handrawn both Peninsular and Borneo Malaysia according to scale.

I hope now to share this map with you and hope that you, too, may imagine journeys within this version of Malaysia.
